Haze

What is haze?

Haze is couldy water that indicates a water clarity problem in a pool. It can result from the accumulation of dirt, suntan lotion, algae and bacteria, minerals, and body oils.

What causes haze?

  • Poor Filtration
  • Improper Water Balance
  • Poor Circulation
  • Improper Chemical Maintenance
  • Poor Housekeeping and Environment

How do I treat haze?

  • Make sure your returns on the pool are directed slightly downward away from the skimmer for a circular flow pattern.
  • Run circulation/filtration system for 8-12 hours a day during bad weather, high use, or when having clarity problems.
  • Chemically clean the filter at least two times per season.
  • Check pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, etc. regularly.
  • Brush pool sides and bottom weekly, even if pool is equipped with an automatic pool cleaner.
  • Remove leaves, dirt, and other debris from pool.
  • Clean skimmer baskets regularly (weekly).

What do algae look like?

  • Mustard algae- clings to walls, leaving the water clear unless they are physically disturbed. When brushed, it appears to be a fine brown powder.
  • Black Algae- clings to walls and are very difficult to brush.

What causes algae?

  • Poor circulation
  • Improper chemical maintenance
  • Poor filtration
  • Poor housekeeping and environment

How can I treat/prevent algae?

  • Keep chemicals balanced
  • Empty skimmer baskets regularly (weekly)
  • Brush pool weekly

  • Poor circulation
  • Improper chemical maintenance
  • Poor filtration
  • Contaminated equipment
